Moving Atoms vs Matterport BIM files

Matterport sells BIM files as an add-on for spaces captured with Matterport. Moving Atoms converts scans from any scanner. The main differences are input, level of development and what the objects can do.

Short answer

If the site is already captured in Matterport and LOD 200 is enough, Matterport BIM files are convenient. If you scanned with a terrestrial, mobile or handheld scanner, need LOD 300 or more, or need equipment and MEP as separate objects, Moving Atoms delivers within 48 hours.

What Matterport BIM files are

Matterport describes its BIM files as LOD 200 models under BIMForum and BIM-International definitions, delivered as Revit (.rvt), IFC, DWG plans and an RCS point cloud, with options from architecture only to MEP and industrial. Matterport says baseline LOD 200 files can be ready in as few as two business days, and estimates are calculated from the model's floor area. The files come from Matterport-captured spaces, and Matterport notes that accuracy depends on the scan data.

How Moving Atoms works

Moving Atoms is a Scan to BIM service, not a modeling tool you operate. You upload your scan from any scanner (E57, LAS/LAZ, PLY, RCP/RCS, PTS/PTX, FLS, LGSx, meshes or a zipped project, up to 200 GB per file, resumable in the browser), choose the level of development you need, and within 48 hours every object comes back separated, measured and editable, in Revit, IFC, STEP, USD or GLB. For sites that cannot send data out, the conversion can run on-site so the scan never leaves the building. You can open finished examples, including Revit downloads, in our LiDAR samples.
