What LOD means
LOD comes from the BIMForum Level of Development Specification. It describes how far an element is developed, from a generic placeholder to a field-verified, as-built element. For Scan to BIM, where everything already exists, LOD effectively sets how faithfully each element is reproduced from the scan.
LOD 200 to LOD 500
| LOD | What the element looks like | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| LOD 200 | Approximate geometry: generic placeholders with approximate size, shape, position and orientation | Space planning, massing, early studies |
| LOD 300 | Precise geometry: true dimensions, shape, position and orientation as measured | Existing-conditions models, design coordination, digital twins |
| LOD 350 | LOD 300 plus interfaces: connections, supports, anchors, clearance and access zones | Clash detection, MEP coordination, maintenance planning |
| LOD 400 | Fabrication detail: fittings, fasteners, welds and equipment tags | Retrofits, prefabrication, procurement |
| LOD 500 | As-built, field verified against the site | Handover, facilities management, records |

Which LOD to choose
- Renovation or fit-out design: LOD 300 is the usual minimum, and guides commonly describe it as the most requested level for Scan to BIM.
- MEP coordination and clash detection: LOD 350, because connections and clearances matter.
- Prefabrication or retrofitting equipment: LOD 400 for the elements you will fabricate around.
- Facilities management and handover: LOD 500 where you need a verified record.
- Feasibility and space planning: LOD 200 is often enough.
LOD does not have to be uniform. A common brief is LOD 300 for architecture and structure, and LOD 350 for the plant room.
LOD vs LOA
LOD says how developed an element is; Level of Accuracy (LOA), defined by the U.S. Institute of Building Documentation, says how close the model must be to the measured reality, as a tolerance. A good Scan to BIM brief states both: for example LOD 300 at a stated LOA for walls and floors.
Choosing LOD with Moving Atoms
When you upload your scan, pick LOD 200, 300, 350, 400 or 500 and the formats you need. Every object is delivered separately, in the scan's coordinates, within 48 hours. Not sure which level? Book a call and we will recommend one for your use.

Frequently asked questions
What is LOD 300 in Scan to BIM?
LOD 300 means elements are modeled with their true dimensions, shape, position and orientation as measured from the scan. It is the most common level for existing-conditions models.
What is the difference between LOD 300 and LOD 350?
LOD 350 adds interfaces: how elements connect to each other, including supports, anchors and clearance zones. It is used for coordination and clash detection.
What is LOD 500?
LOD 500 is an as-built, field-verified model, used for handover and facilities management.
What is the difference between LOD and LOA?
LOD describes how developed each element is; LOA (Level of Accuracy, from USIBD) sets the measurement tolerance the model must meet.
